Camp Consult supported an investment fund to capacitate its portfolio companies in the development of their own environmental and social management system. The assignment involved the development of a program of interventions including class-room training, workshops, and on-site consultations.
Case Study: Africa – Capacity Building Within an Investment Portfolio
Development finance institutions are active investors in the numerous investment funds that focus on business in Africa. As a condition of their involvement, the fund agrees to apply the same high level of environmental and social performance management to the companies that it finances. This creates a burden on the fund to ensure that investment targets can meet the requirements, and more importantly, that the company will maintain the performance. Given the range of investments that such funds make, this can be a challenge, especially for small businesses operating in Africa.
